Marble Magnets
Wouldn’t you love to have the faces of your big damn heroes stuck to the fridge? So make your own “marble magnets”! For a general introduction to marble magnets, see http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=42973.0.
At your local craft store, look for decorative marbles. Usually these will be in the floral section. You want marbles that are clear and have a reasonably flat side.
You can also get magnets in the craft store. They come in sheets, stacks, and even strips that you can cut to size. “The Magnet Source” makes round magnets that you pop out of a sheet and already have a sticky side ready to use. The magnets shouldn’t be larger than the marbles.
Finally, obtain pictures of your favorite big damn hero, ship, villain, or even that evil genius Joss Whedon. Copy or print them out at a size that will fit behind the marble. Regular printer paper should be fine. You may want to make extra copies in case you mess up a couple while figuring out the process.
Take a marble and place the flat side over the picture. Make sure everything will fit nicely behind the marble. Trace around the marble, then cut the picture out. Hold it up against the marble and trim the paper until you are satisfied. Then, using a white glue that will dry clear, coat the face of the picture with a thin coat of glue and stick the picture to the flat side of the marble. Allow the glue to dry.
Finally, attach the magnet to the back side of the picture. Allow it to dry if you used glue. Then stick your magnet to the fridge and enjoy!
Alternative method: If you are willing to spend a little more money, in the scrapbooking aisle of the craft store look for a product called “page pebbles” from a company called Making Memories. These are round, clear plastic pieces that you’re meant to stick in a scrapbook, but they make great marble magnets. They are uniformly round and lighter than marbles; also, they are already sticky on the back so glue is not needed. I have .jpg files for the nine main characters, Serenity, Joss, and the movie logo designed for the large circular page pebbles (3/4″ diameter); contact me if you want them.
